CWU Hospice Fund

Since 2003 the CWU members have financially supported the Irish Hospice Foundation. Our vision is that no-one should have to face death or bereavement without appropriate care or support. The Hospice care is about treating someone as a living person and not a dying patient. The CWU members contribute a variable sum of money through their payroll deductions at source from their weekly pay to the Hospice Fund, from 13cent to €10 per week depending on their financial situation. An Post, eircom and outside companies have supported this initiative since 2003 most of donations have gone directly towards “The Hospice friendly Hospitals Programme” through the Hospice Foundation.. This year because of Charlie Kelly, who lives in Letterkenny and is on the CWU Finance Committee we decided to also support local Hospice Care throughout Ireland. The Donegal Hospice is our first project we have supported and we wish you every success with your local programme on behalf of the CWU members.

Rosaleen Harkin Brennan on behalf of Donegal Harriers presenting a cheque for e630 to Carmel Browne, Donegal Hospice.

With the weather on their side the outlook was promising for the Donegal Harriers as they embarked on their Charity Meet in Creeslough. A route consisting of natural jumps, ditches and drains as-well as purpose built cross country jumps and fences put every horse and rider’s skills to the test.

Crossing the bay towards Ards, the pace was set for a fast gallop across the strand. Upon reaching Ards the Harriers were faced with another route filled with natural jumps, before returning home back across the bay to Creeslough. €630 was raised from the day and donated to Donegal Hospice. Donegal Harriers wish to thank the landowners and all those who supported and assisted the Meet.

The Hospice Evolves…

Helen McMahon, Palliative Care Nurse Manager
2008 has been a momentous time for the Donegal Hospice, bringing many challenges and changes for those of us who work here. Whilst the work of caring for patients and their loved ones continues uninterrupted, we have all been undergoing major adjustments to the way in which the specialist palliative care service is being managed and developed.
The most significant change for us has been the bringing together of the Home Care service and the Hospice In-Patient unit under the one management structure, united as part of Donegal Community Services or Primary, Community and Continuing Care (PCCC). More

Do We Still Need Your Help?

Dr. Dónal Martin, Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Donegal Hospice is now into its 6th year open to its patients. To those who have had need of its resources – it has been a place of comfort and hope during a difficult time in their lives. We are all very proud of this success, which you have made possible. The Donegal Hospice Project was initiated by a group of dedicated volunteers who passionately believed in the concept of bringing a Palliative Care Service to the people of North West Ireland. We remain indebted to those hardy individuals who brought a Hospice Service to Donegal, at least a decade before it would have otherwise been feasible. But there is another, and equally important group of people who made this all happen. It is you – the people of the North West who give so generously to the start of this Hospice service and continue to facilitate its success. More

Anne McGowan P.R.O. Donegal Hospice Ltd.
Donegal Hospice is to be found in a modern purpose-built building situated in restful grounds at Knocknamona in Letterkenny. Here, a multi disciplinary team of professionals support the medical and nursing staff in providing palliative care to the residents of its six bedrooms and two apartments. The needs of residents’ families are also catered for at this local hospice.
Although a palliative home care service has been provided in Co Donegal since 1989, the hospice itself was not opened until February 2003 and since then the services have been in great demand from people throughout the county. More
